Nadja Elpida Murze is a Cypriot filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist whose work explores colonialism and the enigmatic experience of cinema. Trained in scriptwriting at VSKK in Prague, she has spent five years on international film sets and productions, including at FAMU.
She is currently in post-production on Unfolding, an extended cinema project that pairs a film with an immersive screening. Set in 1890s Cyprus during a drought, it follows a completely silent encounter between a Cypriot seamstress and a British spinster. It unfolds the way we perceive the past: in pieces, out of order, never whole. At its heart, the project is an experiment in how we can interact with film differently.
Her recent experimental film Wanna talk? takes that curiosity further, inviting audiences to meet cinema “in the wild,” beyond the constraints of the conventional screen. It was “distributed” through provocative QR codes placed around the globe in the most unspeakable of places, from public toilets to galleries. The film has since screened at ECRÃ Festival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and at GRRL HAUS CINEMA at Brattle Theatre, USA.
Elpida has also contributed to several acclaimed collaborations. She was a key contributor to To Those to Them, an immersive photography exhibition by Once in a Blue Moon, featured at the Larnaca Biennale 2021.
